Hiking the Rhine River Towns

Chairlift down to Assmannshausen

This weekend, we finally got to try an activity we’d heard about from several folks – hiking along the Rhine River from Rüdesheim to Assmannshausen* (you read that right), a 5km forested walk with awesome views along the way. Only 17€ per adult, 8€ per kid, gets you a cable car ride to the top of the vineyard ridge at Rüdesheim, a chair lift ride back down to the river at Assmannshausen, and a Rhine River boat ride back to Rüdesheim (where your car is parked) with an optional stop at a town across the river, Bingen. We were really hoping to share this adventure with visitors this summer – wishful thinking at this point, but 2021, anyone?!?!? We would highly recommend it as it’s less than an hour from our house!

Here were some highlights:

Rowan’s at the age of giggles – and Matt and I never grew out of it

Plenty of discoveries along the trail:

Hiking through the forest:

Chair lift fun:

Wrapped up with wine on the Rhine:

We were so darn happy to be there! Each time we’ve been on the Rhine, Matt says we should be going there every weekend. With these happy faces, I think he might just be right!

*Assmannshausen is a difficult-to-translate German word meaning, “ass man house”.

  1. Haa! 😂 I think Germans must love that phrase because I remember a biking tour in Munich years ago when the guide asked Jay to be last, where he endearingly became renamed “ass man” (and got a free beer).😊

Great pics! Would love to be hiking and drinking German beer and wine with y’all!
