20 Days, 20 German Towns: Hamburg

Hamburg is Germany’s ‘Second City’ – full of great culture, nightlife, and German history that is familiar to Germans but not necessarily to the rest of us. Hamburg is a huge port town – some of the world’s largest container ships frequent its busy harbor. It was part of the Hanseatic League – a past commercial trading organization of Northern Europe – and as such, has a large British sector with the architecture to match. Cara and I went here in Summer 2020 and took a harbor tour that was only in German, and at the end they played a song that I can only assume is the Hamburg city anthem. It was so catchy that even we understood it, and to this day, we cannot get it out of our heads. (if you’d like to join the fun, the song is, “In Hamburg, sagt man Tschüss”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJukOaYaGjg)
